Prenatal Care

The hallmarks of nurse-midwifery care are continuity and teaching women to be self-reliant and trust their bodies in delivering healthy babies naturally. During pregnancy your Certified Nurse-Midwife will monitor the health of you and your baby, as well as teach you and answer your questions about proper diet, personal hygiene, exercise, sleep, travel, and how to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Your prenatal care begins with an orientation and tour of our facilities-when we will discuss our methods, services, and mutual expectations.

Typically, your first visit with a Certified Nurse-Midwife will be scheduled in the first trimester. Your initial visit will include a complete physical exam, a review of your medical history, blood work, nutritional counseling, and/or a review of any transferred records.

During the prenatal period, you will be advised about reproductive health, preconception, and personal care. Prescriptions for medications and/or vitamins can be prescribed by your Certified Nurse-Midwife, should you require these good health care aids.

Subsequent visits will allow you to get to know the staff and Certified Nurse-Midwives at Birth and Women's Center. Each visit confirms that your pregnancy is going well. You should not have to see a physician unless a medical concern develops. Sonograms are not a requirement of prenatal care unless a medical concern develops that needs close observation.

The month before your baby is due, both parents will be required to attend a pre-birth class at Birth and Women's Center, to learn how to prepare for birth and how to plan your immediate postpartum period.
